The Kedarkantha Trek is undoubtedly one of Uttarakhand’s most popular winter treks Because of its relative ease. It is both a trekker’s delight and a rookie’s rite of passage. This hike, which is covered in gleaming snow during the winter, provides a breathtaking view of the Himalayan peaks. The Kedarkantha trek is unrivalled in its splendour, with spectacular sights of attractive villages, meadows, snow pathways, and dramatic landscape packed with exquisite lakes, mountains, peaceful rivers, and towering Himalayan peaks.

As most destinations around Uttarakhand are enriched in mythological references, Kedarkantha is no different. The most famous reference relating to the place comes straight from the Mahabharata, which notes that Kedarkantha is the place where Lord Shiva in his bull avatar sought refuge from the Pandavas and meditated in the valley but on being interrupted by the locals, he later fled towards Kedarnath. The Trishul of Lord Shiva, constructed at its peak, is also believed to protect the valley and its people.

Best time to travel

To enjoy snow and the real beauty of Kedarkantha then you must visit this place during the winter months between December and April.. It is one the few Himalayan treks that can be accessible during winters.

Itinerary for the Kedarkantha Trek

Day 1: Arrival in Dehradun and to Sankiri

Dehradun is the gateway to Sankri and is well connected to major cities, with Delhi being the closest and most affordable option.

How to Get from Dehradun to Sankri?

Sankri is only accessible by road from Dehradun, and can be reached in a private vehicle, a bus, or by hiring a private cab.

By Private Vehicle: The following route is available. The places which you will be covering include Dehradun, Purola, Mori, Naitwar, Sankri followed by Dehradun, Purola, Mori, Naitwar and Sankri. After this the route will take you in the following way- Dehradun to Purola, Mori, Naitwar to Sankri.

By Bus: There are two buses that run from Dehradun to Sankri, one at 5 a.m. and one at 7 a.m., both departing from the Mussoorie Bus Stand (4 km from ISBT).

Day 2: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab

After a filling breakfast, the hike to Juda Ka Talab begins, leaving Sankri village via the Sor extension. Following the settlement, the road begins to climb steeply towards Kedarkantha Road. You’ll be ascending and crossing several bridges while admiring the breathtaking scenery.

Day 3: From Juda ka Talab, hike to Kedarkantha Base Camp

A 4 kilometre hike from Juda Ka Talab leads to the Kedarkantha Base Camp at 11,150 feet, passing through dense pine forests before opening up to spectacular mountain views. Panoramic views of nearby snow-capped peaks, such as Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kala Nag, and England, to name a few, can be had from here. From this vantage point, you can also see the Kedarkantha peak.

Day 4: Return to Campsite 

The summit of Kedarkantha, marked by a Trishul pointing to the sky, is about 2 hours from the base camp and can be reached via a variety of routes. It’s best to start the hike before sunrise (as early as 3 a.m.) to catch the breathtaking sunrise from the peak (typically around 7 a.m.)

Day 5: Hargaon to Dehradun/Sankri

The path from Hargaon to Sankri is well-marked and is stone-paved. It takes less time because of the descent. Along the way, you’ll be treated to some breathtaking scenery. You can spend the rest of the day in Sankri and explore the picturesque Himalayan village, or you can return to Dehradun the same day if you arrive by car or private cab. Overall, this trip will surely be a memorable one.
